The Art of Being Seen

Featuring Mariah Mitchell and Raven Drew-Hundley

The Village Arts Factory proudly presents a dynamic dual exhibition featuring Detroit-based artists Mariah Mitchell and Raven Drew-Hundley, two powerful voices in contemporary portraiture and mixed media.

Through acrylic, charcoal, and layered textures, Mariah Mitchell captures the quiet strength and individuality of her subjects, inviting viewers to pause and truly see the beauty within each person. Her work is deeply rooted in human connection, offering intimate portraits that celebrate identity in its most authentic form.

In striking contrast and harmony, Raven Drew-Hundley of Raven Blanche Studio presents bold, vibrant works that center and uplift women—particularly African American women—through color, movement, and expressive storytelling. Influenced by artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Alma Thomas, her pieces radiate power, resilience, and unapologetic self-expression.

on display May 1 through May 28, 2026

Together, this exhibition explores the many dimensions of identity, representation, and strength. From nuanced, introspective portraiture to vivid, larger-than-life compositions, Mitchell and Drew-Hundley create a visual dialogue that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.

Visitors are invited to experience a celebration of individuality, culture, and creative voice—an exhibit that not only showcases art, but affirms the beauty and power of being seen.

Join us at the Village Arts Factory on Friday, May 8, for the opening reception of The Art of Being Seen. Stop by between 6:00 and 8:00pm to meet the artists, view the exhibit, and enjoy a variety of light refreshments. There is no cost to attend and all are welcome!

on display April 1 through April 28, 2026

The Village Arts Factory is proud to present a group exhibition featuring members of the Michigan Water Color Society. This collection showcases a wide range of styles, techniques, and subject matter—from expressive abstraction to finely detailed realism—demonstrating the versatility and expressive power of watercolor.

Each work in the exhibition reflects the artist’s unique voice and approach to water media, offering viewers an intimate look at the creative possibilities of the medium. As a juried and professionally driven organization, MWCS artists bring a high level of craftsmanship and innovation to their work, resulting in a compelling and diverse exhibition experience.

This exhibition is part of a longstanding tradition of sharing exceptional watercolor work with communities across Michigan. Visitors are invited to explore the subtlety, luminosity, and spontaneity that define watercolor painting, while engaging with artwork that captures both the beauty of everyday moments and the imagination of the artists behind them.

Featuring the Michigan Water Color Society

Founded in 1946, the Michigan Water Color Society is one of the state’s longest-standing and most respected artist organizations dedicated to watercolor and water media. Established by a collective of visionary artists, the Society was created to promote the appreciation of watercolor painting, support artistic growth, and uphold high standards of creativity and professionalism.

For nearly 80 years, the organization has served as a vital hub for artists across Michigan, offering opportunities for exhibitions, workshops, critiques, and professional development. Through juried exhibitions and community programming, MWCS continues to foster a dynamic and inclusive environment for artists working in watercolor and related media.

Today, the Society’s annual exhibitions and traveling shows bring award-winning work to galleries throughout the state, highlighting both emerging and established artists and celebrating the diversity and innovation of contemporary water media.
